From 6 to 18 November, world leaders along with climate activists, civil society representatives, and CEOs will meet in Egypt for the 27th annual gathering on climate action.
World leaders will gather to discuss how we can tackle the urgent climate and ecological crisis, review progress that has been made, and make pledges for future action. Of the many themes that will be discussed, there will be a big focus on finance and the concept of ‘loss and damage’. Loss and damage refers to how we compensate countries that have contributed least to climate change but are suffering from its worst impacts.
As a global community in Christ, we have a powerful opportunity to speak up about climate issues and to show love to our global neighbours. Here are just some of the ways you can take action over the next two weeks and beyond:
- Pray: Follow the ‘Pray and Fast for the climate’ prayers or sign up to these daily prayers for COP from the Diocese of Leeds, focusing on loss and damage and climate justice
- Act: As churches, think about loving our global neighbours by becoming a Fairtrade Church or supporting an environmental charity. Find resources about how we can engage on global issues from A Rocha’s Eco Church scheme
- Advocate: Speak up by attending a global day of action near you, ringing out church bells, or writing ‘letters for creation’
Environmental action
Enabling prayer, action and advocacy are all an integral part of the Diocesan Environmental Policy and Strategy as we seek to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God's world.
